MARIETTA, Ohio-- The Mount St. Joseph University men's tennis team got their season underway this past weekend, as they traveled to Marietta, Ohio for the Beren Invitational. It would be a successful debut for the Lions as they went 2-1 on the weekend finishing in second place.
The first matchup of the tournament for the Lions would be against Waynesburg University. The Lions would jump out to a quick lead in this one taking all three of the doubles matchups. With the team of Cody Tallon (Bright, IN/ East Central) and Ben Motez (Dayton, OH/ Northridge) defeating their opponents 8-0. The Lions would ride the momentum of a doubles sweep to take a 8-1 overall win in the matchup.
The victory in round one would pit the Lions up against host Marietta College on day two. The Lions again handled themselves well in the doubles portion of the match taking two of the three matches. The team of Cooper Wade (Milan, IN/ Milan) and Ian Stutz (Troy, OH/ Troy) won their second match in as many days together. Wade also equated himself well winning his singles match in a tie break. The Lions would win the match by taking six of the possible nine matches.
With their second win in as many days behind them the Lions would face off with Thomas More in the finals. The Lions run of success would end in this one as they were defeated by a score of 5-0. They were hindered by four withdraws in the singles matchups as the grind of the weekend caught up with a few players.
All told the weekend was a stellar one for the Lions as they kicked off their 2017 season in very solid fashion.
