CINCINNATI, Ohio - Your Mount St. Joseph Lions welcomed the Ravens of Anderson back to Schueler Field on Thursday, April 8th for the final game of the shortened season. A week prior to this matchup the Lions faced off against the Ravens, again at Schueler Field where the two teams each scored a goal ending in a tie. In this matchup, the Lions would command the defensive side of the ball while generating productive offense in the first half to secure the win in the final game of the season.
To begin the first half the Lions would control the offensive side of the pitch and didn't waste much time finding the net. In just the 13th minute Senior
Jodie Weimer (Cleves, Ohio/Taylor) would send a ball streaking down the middle of the pitch for a through ball to fellow Senior
Lauren Haynes (Hamilton, Ohio/Ross) who then tapped the ball over the attacking goalkeeper to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. Following the goal the Lions continued attacking and just 6 minutes later Weimer would get a goal of her own. Haynes would cross the ball and find Weimer sitting roughly 10 yards away from the goal. Weimer would then volley the ball for a shot that smacked directly off the crossbar and back to Weimer's right foot who then smashed the ball into the bottom left corner to give the Lions a 2-0 advantage in just the 18th minute.
Following the goal from Weimer each team would trade shots before Anderson managed to find the net in the 35th minute to trim the Lions' lead to 2-1. Following the goal due to lightning the game would be delayed for roughly a hour. When the teams resumed play, nothing would transpire in the remaining 10 minutes as the Lions remained on top 2-1.
After a short halftime both squads stepped back onto the pitch to begin the second half. The Lions continued to push the offensive side of the pitch and pairing that with stellar defense. The Lions only managed to get 2 shots off in the half but held the Ravens to only 1 shot in the second half. After 90 minutes of play, the Lions were victorious by a score of 2-1.
Lauren Haynes led the Lions with 3 shots, and a goal. Paired with Haynes was Senior
Jodie Weimer who had 2 shots and a goal. Off the bench freshman
Alex Huon (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) added an offensive presence with 2 shots, both on target. The Lions defense was dominant in the win only allowing 5 total shots from the Ravens and only 2 on target.
Congratulations to the seven Lions seniors for a tremendous career while being a part of the Mount's soccer program, we wish you nothing but the best! Check back in next season as we hope to resume to a normal schedule! Good job ladies! Go Lions!
