Mount Alum Phil Gilmore Tabbed To Lead Golf Program

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Phil Gilmore '14 has been named the new head coach of the men's and women's golf programs at Mount St. Joseph University, by Director of Athletics Melanee Wagener

"It is an honor to be named the next coach of the golf teams here at The Mount," said Gilmore. "I could not be more excited to guide these young women and men on and off of the golf course, and produce young adults that will positively impace our community and beyond. Coach Sparhawk has given his all to this program, and because of him, golf at The Mount is relevant. I am thankful for this opportunity to continue this tradition and guid this program in the chase for an HCAC Championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament."

Coach Gilmore comes home to The Mount after a successful playing career for the Lions from 2010-14. While earning four varsity letters at The Mount, Gilmore was an outstanding student-athlete helping lead his team to a pair of top-two finishes in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championships. A natural leader for coach Sparhawk and the Lions, he was a three-time captain in his four years with the program.

"I have had the luxury of knowing Phil since he joined the golf team as a freshman in the fall of 2010.  Although he was a good golfer when he arrived, he worked extremely hard to get better each and every year," Said Sparhawk. "During that time he showed great leadership and communication skills.  He was named captain of the golf team as a sophomore.  We had great discussions about the program throughout his playing career and he showed he was wise beyond his years.  He knows what it takes to be an MSJ Lion and I am very excited for him and what he's going to bring to the program!  The program is going to be in great hands for a long time with Phil at the helm!"

Prior to returning to The Mount, he was the boy's golf coach at Wilmington High School in Wilmington, Ohio. Also spending time as a teacher at both Wilmington High School and Hillsboro High School.

"We are extremely excited for Phil to take over the men's and women's golf programs here at The Mount," Said Wagener. "Being a Mount alum puts him in an outstanding spot to continue right where coach Sparhawk left off, and continue building our program into a team that can compete for an HCAC Championship."

Coach Gilmore and the Lions will get their 2021 season underway on Sept. 4-5 as the women's team hosts the StateLine Shootout at Miami Whitewater Golf Course, and the men team travels to Lexington, Ky. to play in the Transylvania Invitational!
