Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Nate Hill

The Mount Drops a Pair of Matches at the Sewanee Women's Soccer Tournament

SEWANEE, Tenn. - This past weekend your Mount St. Joseph University women's soccer team traveled to Sewanee, Tennessee to compete at the Sewanee Women's Soccer Tournament. The Lions first faced off against the Tigers of Sewanee on Saturday 9/3 followed by another match versus Maryville on Sunday 9/4. The Lions fell just short in each match falling by just a goal in each contest.

GAME ONE:    MSJ - 0     SEWANEE - 1
In the Lions first game of the weekend they would face off against the hosting squad, the Tigers of Sewanee. The Tigers pushed the tempo early firing 4 shots (3 on target) in the first 15 minutes of play. Freshman Goalkeeper Alyse Harris made her debut, shining early with those three saves to begin the contest. Both defenses continued to hold strong in the first half as the scoreline read 0-0 after 45 minutes.

In the second half the Tigers again pushed the attack. The Lions held strong for the first 15 minutes of play before Sewanee would be awarded a penalty kick after a trip inside of the box. Goalkeeper Alyse Harris guessed correctly but could not come up with the save giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead. However, the Lions defense responded nicely shutting down a pair of shots following the goal. The Lions would get one final opportunity to tie it in the 82nd minute but a great save on a shot from McKenzie Schneeman kept the Lions off the scoresheet. After 90 minutes of play the Lions fell to Sewanee 1-0.

GAME TWO:     MSJ - 1     MARYVILLE - 2
In the Lions second game of the weekend they faced off against the Scots of Maryville. The Lions took a different approach to game two pushing the attack early. The Lions found themselves inside of Maryville's defensive zone and forced a corner kick. Senior Ashley Wilson stepped to the corner to take the kick and whipped a ball into the box. Fellow Senior Renee Padavick stepped in front of a defender and punished a header into the top right corner giving the Lions an early 1-0 advantage in just the 10th minute. The Lions continued to push the pace offensively while playing sound defense to end the half. At halftime the Lions still held their 1-0 lead.

To begin the second half of play the Scots wasted no time equalizing. Just 1 minute into the half Maryville found the back of the net tying the score at 1. The Lions responded well firing shots back at Maryville but each squad could not find the target. The Lions offense could not find their rhythm and Maryville would go on the counter attack. With just 5 minutes remaining the Scots would find the net again giving them a late 2-1 lead. The Lions were unable to answer, falling to Maryville 2-1.
