BEREA, Kentucky – On Wednesday, September 6
th, your Mount St. Joseph University Lions traveled to Berea College to take on the Mountaineers in the second match of the season. The Lions were quick to get on the board, scoring 5 goals in the first half by five different players. 2 more goals were scored in the second half by two more players keeping everyone on their toes. The Lions defense did a great job only allowing one shot on goal in the 90 minutes of play and ending with a shutout.
To start the scoring off,
Alondra Sotelo picked off a pass in the center of the field and set herself up for a perfect drive down the field. After dribbling past 2 defenders, Sotelo drove the ball to the back, right corner to make it 1-0 in the 4
th minute of play. Not even a minute later,
Mckenzie Schneeman found the back of the net off of an excellent run from freshmen
Mary Anhofer. After pressing Berea's kickoff, Anhofer found the ball and passed it to
Ella Pittman for a quick give and go down the flank leading to a beautiful pass across the face of the goal which Schneeman slotted in for a 2-0 lead.
Anhofer kept up her work down the flank slotting another great cross across the box in the 13
th minute.
Layla Youtsler capitalized on the cross scoring the 3
rd goal of the game and securing another assist for Anhofer. Keeping the goals coming, Shcneeman received a pass at midfield and quickly slotted it through to Anhofer who flew by the defenders for a breakaway and smashed one low for a 4-0 lead in the 20
th minute giving the freshmen 2 assists and her first collegiate goal on the evening. With just 4 minutes left in the half,
Kerigan Pollard received a pass and took on a defender to the end line slotting a beautiful bangu back across the center of the box.
Bailey Dotson got on the end of the pass and rocketed it into the corner of the net securing her first collegiate goal, as well.
After halftime, the Lions pushed 2 more goals in the back of the net. In the first two minutes of play, the Lions got a corner kick that fell to
Haley Trittschuh in the center of the box. Being surrounded by 3 defenders, Trittschuh dropped the ball back to
Abby Cole who hammered it to the corner for the first goal of the 2
nd half putting the Lions up 6-0. 5 minutes later,
Kerigan Pollard found the ball in the final third once again. She slotted the ball to
Ella Pittman who found the back of the net securing the 7-0 win and getting Pollard her 2
nd assist of the night.
UP NEXT: Your Mount St. Joseph Lions are back in action for their home opener at Schueler Field this weekend on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday, September 9
th the Lions will take on Marietta College who they have beat by one goal in their last two meetings at 6 pm. On Sunday, September 10
