Lions Lose Heartbreaker in Penalty Kicks

CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Mount St. Joseph University women's soccer team fell to Hanover 5-4 in penalty kicks in the HCAC semifinals.

In the first half, the Mount offense came out strong, applying continuous pressure on the Panthers' defense. The Lions produced seven shots and earned five corner kicks. The defense played well, not allowing a shot on target and conceding only three total shots. Despite their efforts, the Mount went into halftime tied 0-0.

In the second half, Hanover scored to take a 1-0 lead in the 63rd minute. Less than ten minutes later, Kendal Fox found the back of the net off a double assist from Mary Anhofer and Payge Callahan. Fox's goal tied the game at 1-1 and sent it to sudden-death overtime.

The Lions had several chances to win the match in the two sudden-death overtimes but couldn't convert. The match went to penalty kicks, where Hanover scored all five and the Mount scored four. Despite outshooting the Panthers 21-10 and earning nine corner kicks to Hanover's zero, the Lions ultimately fell in heartbreaking fashion.

The Lions ended their season in the HCAC semifinals. The Mount finished the year with a 10-6-4 record and the HCAC regular-season championship. Kendal Fox led the team offensively with twelve goals and three assists, while Mary Anhofer added four goals and eleven assists. Goalkeeper Megan Kallmeyer recorded seventy saves on the season.
