LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY — The Mount St. Joseph University women's soccer team lost its first match of the season to No. 12-ranked Wisconsin-La Crosse, 2-1, at neutral-site Lynn Family Stadium on Friday evening, bringing the Lions' record to 3-1-1.
The Mount struck first just 48 seconds into the match when Mary Anhofer scored off a pass from Gabrielle Eagan, giving the Lions an early 1-0 lead. This was the first goal the Eagles had allowed this season after recording five consecutive shutouts to start their season. As the match continued, both teams traded shots and scoring opportunities. In the 36th minute, Wisconsin-La Crosse scored to tie the game at 1-1, and the teams would take that score into halftime.
The Eagles came out strong and aggressive in the second half, but the Mount defense and goalkeeper Megan Kallmeyer made five key saves to keep the match knotted at 1-1. In the 68th minute, Preslee Rugg sent a shot that was saved by the Eagles' goalkeeper, nearly breaking the tie. Wisconsin-La Crosse would break the tie in the 72nd minute, taking a 2-1 lead. The Lions had a corner kick in the 86th minute but could not convert, as the Eagles held on to win 2-1.
The Mount continued its tough nonconference schedule, going toe-to-toe with one of the top teams in the country in Wisconsin-La Crosse, which was ranked No. 12 in the country and the preseason favorite to win the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).
UP NEXT: The Mount will round out its home nonconference schedule when it takes on Sewanee on Sunday, September 20, at Schueler Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
