ANDERSON, INDIANA — The Mount St. Joseph University women's soccer team defeated Anderson University 5-2 in its first HCAC match of the season at Fridley Field Saturday evening, moving its record to 4-2-1 and 1-0 in HCAC play.

The Lions' offense came out firing, scoring twice in the first 15 minutes of the match. Just under 10 minutes in, Mary Anhofer scored her fifth goal of the season, giving the Mount a 1-0 lead. Less than five minutes later, Gabrielle Eagan scored her fourth goal of the season off a pass from Anhofer, extending the lead to 2-0. In the 35th minute, the Ravens scored to make it 2-1, which the teams would take into halftime.

The Lions extended their lead early in the second half when Kendal Fox found the back of the net, assisted by Mary Anhofer and Khloe Young, to make it 3-1. Preslee Rugg added another goal in the 71st minute, and Gabrielle Eagan scored her second of the match less than a minute later, extending the lead to 5-1. Anderson scored with 30 seconds remaining in the match, but the Mount would open HCAC play with a 5-2 win. The Lions outshot the Ravens 20-9 and took eight more corner kicks, 11-3.

UP NEXT: The Mount will travel to Marietta, Ohio, to finish non-conference action as they take on Marietta College on Wednesday, September 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
