Phil Poetter (Cincinnati, OH/Anderson) intercepted three passes today, returning two for TDs, and teammate Jake Davis (Cincinnati, OH/Anderson) rushed for 109 yards and two scores, helping the Mount to a 45-24 win today at HCAC-foe Manchester College. The Lions are now 6-1 overall, 4-1 in the HCAC and will host Defiance College on Oct. 27 at 4 p.m. Manchester falls to 3-4, 1-3.
The Mount is in second place in the HCAC with a 4-1 mark while Franklin and Defiance share the conference lead with a 4-0 mark.
Poetter started the scoring today against the Spartans with a 26-yard interception return just 54 seconds into the game. Kevin Koch (Cincinnati, OH/Roger Bacon) kicked a 20-yard field goal in the second quarter and quarterback Vince Palmer (Cincinnati, OH/Anderson) tossed a 41-yard scoring strike to receiver Tim Meiner (Hamilton, OH/Talawanda) with 1:21 left in the first quarter as the Lions took a 17-10 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Davis scored both his rushing TDs in the third quarter, on runs of 14 and 39 yards, as the Mount rolled out to a commanding 31-17 lead after three quarters. Meiner and Poetter added their second TDs of the game in the fourth quarter as the Mount went on to record their ninth win in 12 games in the all-time series against Manchester.
Poetter's two interception TDs in one game tied a Mount game record while his three interceptions overall also tied a Mount game record. He now has a Mount career record four interception TD returns. Kyle Prosser (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) had a team-high 12 tackles. The Mount held two Manchester quarterbacks to nine-of-23 passing for 70 yards with four interceptions.
Palmer finished 12-of-24 passing for 213 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. The Mount had 416 yards of total offense, was six-of-18 on third down conversions and three-of-four on fourth down conversions.
