The Mount ran an efficient offense and a shutdown defense today as they rolled to a 28-6 win over Manchester College on Senior Day. The Lions are now 5-3 overall, 3-3 in the HCAC and will play at HCAC-foe Defiance College on Nov. 8. Manchester falls to 4-4, 2-3 with the loss.
Before the game, the Lions honored 10 senior players. They were Rocky Siegel (Cincinnati, OH/Glen Este), John Barbour (Reading, OH/Reading), Ricky Stautberg (Cincinnati, OH/Elder), Phil Poetter (Cincinnati, OH/Anderson), Nick Yahl (St. Mary's, OH/Memorial), Ben Widolff (Cincinnati, OH/Elder), Joe Klump (West Harrison, IN/East Central), Jeff Browning (Harrison, OH/Harrison), Tim Meiner (Hamilton, OH/Talawanda) and Kyle O'Brien (Lima, OH/Lima Central Catholic).
The Lionsnearly doubled the output of the visiting Spartans in almost every significant statistical category, out-rushing their opponent 203-108 yards, out-passing them 128-48 yards and gaining 19 first downs to Manchester's seven first downs. The Spartans, however, did get on the scoreboard first, when Brandon Wells raced in from six yards out with 1:49 to play in the first quarter. Manchester, which missed the extra point, led until 4:36 left in the first half, when Jake Davis (Cincinnati, OH/Anderson) scored on a one-yard run, and Brian Weimer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) added the PAT kick to put the Lions up 7-6. Davis would carry 21 times in the game for 84 yards.
Mount back-up quarterback Ben Hunterman (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills), in relief of starter Vince Palmer (Cincinnati, OH/Anderson) tossed a 49-yard TD strike to Derick Tabar (Cincinnati, OH/Colerain) with 41 seconds left in the opening half, and Weimer added the PAT kick, to put the Mount ahead 14-6 heading into the locker room. Manchester, which scored its touchdown on their third possession of the game, would close the half with four scoreless possessions, including a missed field from 40 yards.
Hunterman, who rushed for 50 yards and was 13-of-22 for 116 yards passing with one TD and one interception in the game, raced in from 20 yards midway through the third quarter. Weimer's kick made the score 21-6 in the Mount's favor. Davis' backfield mate Tyrone Jones (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne) finished the scoring with just over two minutes left in the game when he ran in from the three-yard line. Jones added 53 yards rushing in the game.
Tabar had a team-high three receptions for 57 yards and also ran 18 yards with a fumble recovery early in the game. The Mount's defense, which held the Spartans to 157 yards of total offense, and two-of-12 on third down, was led by Erik Prosser (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills), who had 10 tackles and a sack, and Yahl, who collected eight tackles. Juan Helvey (Middletown, OH/Middletown) had an interception return of 22 yards. Manchester did not score on any of its six possessions of the second half.
