Box Score Host Defiance College scored the go-ahead points today on a 34-yard TD pass play with 4:07 left in the game and made it stand up as they defeated the Lions, 21-14. The Mount is now 5-4 overall and 3-4 in the conference, finishing with their first sub-.500 mark in the HCAC since the 2001 season when they went 0-6. Defiance goes to 3-6, 3-3.
The Mount will play at Thomas More College next week in the annual Bridge Bowl game. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
The game against the Yellow Jackets started out on a bad note for the LIons as they turned the ball over on their first possession. With Defiance taking control of the ball on the Mount 15-yar line, the home team didn't wait long to get on the scoreboard, scoring on a seven-yard TD run with 11:24 showing on the clock. After two, three-and-out possessions by the Lions, and another turnover - this time a fumble - Defiance upped their advantage to 14-0 after they took over the ball on the Mount two-yard line and scored on the next play.
The Lions finally got on the scoreboard late in the first half when Ben Hunterman (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) scored on a two-yard run with just eight seconds remaining in the opening half. After holding Defiance on its first possession of the second half, and gaining the ball at their own 36-yard-line, the Mount put together its best drive of the game, with Jake Davis (CIncinnati, OH/Anderson) capping a six-play, 64-yard, 2:31 drive by scoring on a two-yard run. Brian Weimer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) booted the PAT kick to tie the score at 14-all with 10:17 left in the third quarter. The key play of the drive was a 40-yard pass completion from Hunterman to wideout Tim Meiner (Oxford, OH/Talawanda).
Neither team was able to generate much offense the rest of the third quarter, and most of the fourth quarter, before Defiance's go-ahead score in the last quarter. The Lions went three-and-out on their next to last possession of the game and Hunterman was intercepted at the Mount 35-yard line on the last play of the game.
The Mount was held to 192 yards of offense, including 72 yards on the ground while Hunterman was 12-of-27 passing for 120 yards and two interceptions. Brad Sersion (Cincinnati, OH/Anderson) had a team-high five receptions. Rocky Siegel (Cincinnati, OH/Glen Este) led the Mount with 13 tackles while teammate Erik Prosser (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) chipped in 10 tackles. Defiance had 193 yards of offense in the game.
