Mount football team falls by a 22-14 score at Defiance College

Host Defiance College scored 16 second half points today to up end the Lions, 22-14 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play. The Mount, 3-2 overall, 2-2 in the HCAC, will host Homecoming 2010 on Oct. 16 when they take on Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

The Lions and Yellow Jackets provided a defensive battle in front of a large crowd at Defiance, with the Mount holding a 7-6 lead at the intermission. Defiance added a 27-yard field goal midway through the third quarter, to grab a 9-7 advantage which they would not give up the rest of the game. A four-yard TD by the Yellow Jackets, and subsequent PAT kick the home team forged ahead by a 16-7 score. Chris Howland (Loveland, OH/Loveland) and wide out Derick Tabar (Cincinnati, OH/Colerain) hooked up on a 41-yard TD pass play, and Brian Weimer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) converted the PAT to cut the deficit to 16-13 with 2:57 left in the game. Defiance then put the game away. Faced with a third-and-12 from their 37 yard line, they scored on a 63-yard pass play with 2;22 to play in the game.

The Lions last drive of the game came to an end when Howland was intercepted on a desperation pass facing a fourth-and-28 from the Lions' 32-yard line. The loss was the Mount's second straight, both in the HCAC.

Noah Joseph (Atlanta, GA/Blessed Trinity) led the Mount with 84 yards rushing while Howland was three-for-11 for 45 yards, one TD and one interception. Tyler Feine was seven-for-17 for 91 yards passing with one TD and one interception. Derick Tabar had three receptions for 57 yards and two TDs. Derek Termuhlen (Milford, OH/Milford) had a team-high 14 tackles while Rob Fox (Harrison, OH/Colerain) added a sack.

Defiance out-gained the Mount 333-246 in total yards, had seven sacks to the Mount's one sack, and had the edge in first downs, 19-12.
