The Lions closed 2011 HCAC play today behind a strong rushing attack and solid defense, recording a 41-23 home win over Hanover College. The Mount, 6-3 overall, moves to 5-3 in the HCAC and into third place. They will conclude season play on Nov. 12 when they host cross-river rival Thomas More College in the annual Bridge Bowl game.
After a slow start, which saw the Mount trailing by a 10-0 score with 4:54 to play in the first quarter, the Lions rolled off six unanswered scores - all touchdowns, to roll out to a convincing 41-10 advantage with 7:07 left in the fourth quarter. Four of the Lions' six touchdowns scored during that run came on the ground, as leading rusher James Clay (Louisville, KY/Manual Dupont) accounted for three of those scores, including a school-record 95-yard scoring jaunt. The Mount forced six Hanover punts in the game, and held the Panthers' to five-of-16 on third down conversions. The Lions also held Hanvoer to under 50 percent passing efficiency and 124 yards rushing. The Mount also had four sacks and three fumble recoveries.
The Mount, led by Clay's 159 yards rushing on 13 carries, had 42 team carries for 272 yards. Brian Pitzer (South Salem, OH/McClain) added 63 yards rushing while completing eight-of-21 passing for 121 yards and a 29-yard TD strike to Sean Keller (Maineville, OH/Kings).
Derek Termuhlen (Milford, OH/Milford) led the Mount with a game-high 10 tackles while teamates Will Palmer (Atlanta, GA/Westlake) and Tyler Hopperton (Walton, KY/Simon Kenton) added six tackles each. Juan Gomez (Johns Creek, GA/Chattahoochee) had two sacks.
