Box Score
Andrea Caldwell (Cincinnati, OH/Purcell Marian) got the Lions on the scoreboard today in the 76th minute of the game, but the Mount gave up the game-tying goal with 45 seconds to play as the Lions tied Marietta at home, 1-1, in double overtime. The Mount, 0-3-1 overall, will return to action on Sept. 13 when they host Cincinnati Christian University.
Caldwell scored the Lions' first goal of the 2011 season late in the second half before Marietta's Cara Nuss tied the game with under a minute to play after a scurry in front of the Lions' goal. Marietta out-shot the Mount, 21-13, in the game, and held a 5-3 edge in shots in the two overtime periods as neither team was able to get the game-winner.
Shelbi Benzinger (Covington, KY/Scott) had ten saves in goal for the Mount.
When asked about today's tough game against Marietta, Mount Head Coach Leah Todd, responded, "We fought hard and continued working hard despite injuries and Marietta's late goal. We had many areas where we showed good improvement. Even though we tied the game, it is still a tough match having worked so hard, and not to be victorious. We have improved from our last game and that shows we are headed in the right direction. We will continue to improve and be ready when conference play begins."
