Mount women's volleyball team opens play at the Wittenberg University Fall Classic

The College of Mount St. Joseph began play at the two-day Wittenberg University Classic on Friday falling in two matches, 3-2 to Alma College and 3-0 to Ohio Northern University. The Lions, 1-6 on the season, will return to action at the Classic on Sept. 15 when they play Otterbein University and Wittenberg University.

The Mount captured sets one and two against Alma, 26-24, 25-20, but fell 30-28, 25-17 and 15-12 in the final three sets, as Alma went to 7-1 on the season. The Lions had 55 kills in the match, as Nicole Sherpensky (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest) led the way with 19 kills while teammate Bethani Ritter (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley) chipped in 12 kills. Hannah Vanarsdall (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley) added 11 kills and eight digs while teammate Michelle Woods (Ft. Wright, KY/Newport Central Catholic) added 17 digs. Melanie Monahan (Mason, OH/Bishop Fenwick) added 24 assists.

In the team's second match of the day, ONU posted a 25-18, 27-25, 25-18 victory over the Lions to run their record to 10-2 on the season. Sherpensky had 12 kills in the match while Vanarsdall added nine kills. Jaclyn Stenger (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) had 14 digs in the match while Janelle Davis (Convoy, OH/Wayne Trace) had 23 assists.
