Lions' volleyball team loses hard-fought five-set match at #23 Otterbein University

The College of Mount St. Joseph opened the 2012 season tonight with a tough, 3-2 loss at #23-ranked Otterbein University. The Lions won sets one and three at Otterbein, but dropped the fourth set, 25-23 and the fifth and deciding set, 15-10 to the Cardinals. The Mount is back in action on Sept. 7 when they host the two-day Charlie Wrublewski Invitational Tournament. They will take on Maryville (TN) College and Birningham-Southern College on the first day of play and then on Sept. 8 tjhey are slated to play Heidelberg University and Thomas More College.

Nicole Sherpensky (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest) and Hannah Vanarsdall (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley) led three Mount players with double-figuire kills, totaling 14 each. Stephanie Chisholm (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) added 11 kills. Melanie Monahan (Mason, OH/Bishop Fenwick) had 44 assists in the match for the Lions, while teammate Jaclyn Stenger chipped in a match-high 17 digs and four service aces. Sherpensky also had four block solos and one block assist. Otterbein held a .318 to .158 hitting percentage advantage in the fifth set.
