The Mount opened up weekend play at the Christopher Newport University Tournament on Saturday afternoon, with the host team posting a 7-0 win. The Lions, 0-3 on the 2012 campaign, will resume action on Sept. 9 when they play at Christopher Newport against undefeated Virginia Wesleyan College.
The Captains jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the Lions today, and added two goals in the second half, as the Mount split goalkeeping chores between Shebi Benzinger (Covington, KY/Scott) and Madison Freeman (Wilder, KY/Newport Central Catholic). Christopher Newport, which evened their record at 2-2 on the season, out-shot the Lions 40-4 in the game, and 20-2 in shots on goal. They held a slight edge in corner kicks, 7-3.
