Lions' football team continues winning ways with a 53-28 win at Hanover College

The Lions' offense continued to put big numbers up on the scoreboard, and on the statistical page on Saturday, as they rolled to a 53-28 win at Hanover College in HCAC action. The Lions, stay tied atop the conference standings with Franklin College, with both sport 4-0 HCAC marks. The Mount, 5-1 overall, will next host the 4-2 Grizzlies on Oct. 18. Hanover fell to 0-6, 0-4 with the loss to the Lions.

The Lions scored early and often in the game on Saturday against the Panthers, with Denzel Norvell (Dayton, OH/Thurgood Marshall) scoring on a 33-yard run at 10:15 of the first half. That would be the first of six unanswered scores for the Mount. Shane Kelly (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin) would add a 30-yard field goal before the end of the first quarter, giving the Mount a 9-0 lead. Greg Simpson (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) then had a hand in three straight TDs for the Lions, scoring on a 73-yard run, and tossing two, short TD passes to John Peters before the end of the first half, giving the Lions a commanding 30-0 lead at halftime. Hanover gained just over 100 yards of offense in the first half, turning possession of the ball over six times on punts, twice on interceptions, and once on a fumble.

Hanover finally got on the scoreboard at 13:32 in the third quarter, on a 56-yard TD pass, but Simpson tossed his third TD of the game  - this time to Ronnell Colbert  (Louisville, KY/Doss) - and Mike Williams (Cincinnati, OH/Taft) scored on a nine-yard run, giving the Mount a 46-7 third quarter advantage. With the Lions' subbing freely in the second half, defensive back Judge Love (Louisville, KY/Ballard) returned a block punt 13 yards for a score, and kicker Ryan Miller (Boca Raton, FL/Pope John Paul II) booted the PAT, to give the Mount a 53-7 lead just before the end of the quarter.

THe Mount had 294 rushing yards and 140 yards passing. Simpson led the offense with 97 yards on the gorund and was 14-of-22 for 140 yards in the air. Norvell had 87 yards on 11 carries while Charles McCall (Miami, FL/Miami Norland) chipped in 71 yards rushing. Colbert led the team with five receptions for 71 yards. Love led the defense with seven tackles, while linebacker Brent McCleerey (Mooresville, IN/Monrovia) had two interceptions and Zach Dickman (Coldwater, OH/Coldwater) had an interception.
