Mount football registers a 48-16 win at Earlham College

Lions' sophomore running back Denzel Norvell (Dayton, OH/Thurgood Marshall) ran for 139 yards, and the Mount compiled 349 rushing yards in the game, as they rolled to a 48-16 win today at HCAC-rival Earlham College. The Lions, 4-1 overall, are tied atop the conference standings with Franklin College, with each sporting 3-0 marks. The Mount is back in action on Oct. 11 when they play an HCAC game at Hanover College (0-5, 0-3).

Norvell got the scoring started for the Mount with just over 2 1/2 minutes expired, when he raced 31 yards for a score. Shane Kelly (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin) added the PAT to give the Lions a 7-0 lead. Earlham, however, would bounce back, putting 16 unanswered points on the scoreboard to grab a 16-7 advantage. The Quakers scored on a nine-yard TD pass and one-yard TD run, and also recorded a safety against the Mount. That is all the scoring the home team would do the rest of the day, as the Mount got a second rushing TD from Norvell, and a 30-yard TD strike from Greg Simpson (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) to John Peters (West Chester, OH/Lakota West), giving the Mount a 20-16 lead at the intermission.

Peters and Simpson would add third quarter scores for the Mount, to boost the lead to 34-16, while De'Marco Thomas (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) added a a three-yard TD run in the same quarter. The Mount closed the scoring midway through the fourth quarter, when Dominic Gabriele (Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas) scored his first collegiate TD on a one-yard plunge.

Earlham amassed only 10 yards of total offense in the second half, punting on six of the their seven possessions. The Mount rolled up 528 yards on offense, with Simpson adding 97 yards rushing and completing six-of-13 passes for 110 yards and two scores. The Lions averaged 6.2 yards per rush and nearly 18 yards per reception. Earlham had 131 yards passing and 102 yards rushing, 2.3 yards per rush. The Mount had 27 first downs to Earlham's 14 first downs. Judge Love (Louisville, Ky/Ballard) led the defense with eight tackles while teammate Montez Patterson (Cincinnati, OH/Hughes) had five tackles, including two of the team's three sacks.
