Host John Carroll University kicked off their weekend tournament on Friday night with a 3-0 win over the Mount. The Lions, 4-6 on the season, will be back in action at the JCU Invitational on Sept. 13 when they take on Kenyon College and Case Western Reserve University.
John Carroll recorded set wins of 25-16, 25-13, 25-23 to improve to 8-1 in 2014. The Mount jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the third set, behind a varied hitting attack, but saw John Carroll tie the match at 18-all at the end of four straight points. The two teams battled back-and-forth down the stretch, with tie scores through 23-all. The match ended on two straight Mount hitting errors.
Jessica Wilgenbusch (Sunman, IN/East Central) led the Mount with six kills and added four digs and two block assists. Janelle Davis (Convoy, OH/Wayne Trace) chipped in 18 assists and a team-high nine digs. Three different Lions had five block assists each.
