Lions' men's basketball team maintains tie atop HCAC standings

The Mount St. Joseph University Lions had five players in double figures on Saturday night as they continued to keep the pace atop the HCAC standings by collecting a 72-47 home win over HCAC-foe Manchester College. The Mount, 8-3 overall, is tied for first place in the HCAC with four other teams, each sporting a 3-1 mark.

The Lions return to action on Jan. 7 when they continued conference play with a game at Bluffton University.

In Saturday’s game against the Spartans, the visitors took a fast lead by hitting a long three-pointer to start the game, but Femi Thompson (Cincinnati, OH/Aiken) answered back shortly after, giving the Mount an early 4-3 lead. At the 15:58 mark, the Mount led 6-5 - the closest the Spartans got to within the Lions.

The Lions went on a 14-0 run to pull away with a big lead. From there on, the Mount’s score more than doubled Manchester’s. Bobby Murdock (Cincinnati, OH/Anderson) finished the half hitting a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Lions a 43-20 lead at intermission. Murdock finished the game with 12 total points, with his entire total coming in the first half. He tied for the team lead in points for the night, with Thompson. Half of his points Murdock’s points came off three-pointers.

The Mount finished the first half with seven made three-pointers out of only 11 attempts giving them a 63.6% shooting percentage from beyond the arc. Half of their total shots made in the first half were three pointers.

Erik Edwards (Cincinnati, OH/Roger Bacon) lead the team in rebounds with six which contributed to the total 41 on the night. Edwards also finished with six total points and an assist.

Junior guard Joel Scudder (Greendale, IN/South Dearborn) finished with 11 points, going 3-for-5 from the three-point range. Scudder added five rebounds and two assists. Mark Allen (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest) finished with 11 points, five rebounds, and three assists.
