THE BASICS
Mount St. Joseph University (7-5-1, 2-2 HCAC) fell to Hanover College (9-4-0, 3-0-0 HCAC) Wednesday night when 2014 HCAC Offensive Player of the Year Anna Cornacchione scored the game winning goal in overtime.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lions held the offensively powerful Hanover Panthers scoreless in the first half of play, a huge improvement from the last meeting when the Lions gave up four goals in the first half to the Panthers last season.
The Lions continued to play great defense on the night, holding the Panthers scoreless in regulation time. The Mount defenders accumulated eight blocked shots, blocking almost half of the 20 shots Hanover attempted.
The game continued into overtime with the Lions' defense dominating the offensive juggernaut of Hanover. The Panthers finally got their chance when in the second overtime, a foul occurred at the top of the box. The Hanover player took a shot at the goal with Lindsey Sturwold knocking it down. The ball fell right in front of the goal to an open Cornacchione who tapped it right past the recovering Sturwold for the win.
The Panthers outshot the Lions 20-5 in the game.
STANDOUTS
Lions defenders Taylor Murphy, Morgan Froehlke, Taylor Clark, and Mackenzie Money played the entire length of the game and showed great determination to fight off the attacking Panthers.
Kaylan Gruber led the team in shots with two on the night.
