THE BASICS
Mount St. Joseph University (10-6-3, 5-2-2 HCAC) fell to Franklin College (16-2, 8-1 HCAC) by a 3-1 score in the HCAC semi-final Wednesday night. It was the first appearance in the HCAC tournament by the Lions since 2010.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lions came out strong against the conference's second seed, finding the net in the 9th minute when Lexie Froehlke had a perfect pass down the middle to Morgan Knasel who darted past two defenders for the score.
The Grizzlies found an opportunity to tie the game in the first half when the Mount goalie Lindsey Sturwold ran into a Franklin player on a break-away. Sturwold picked the correct side on the shot attempt, but it wasn't enough to keep Franklin from grabbing the equalizer.
Going into halftime the Lions were out-shooting the Grizzlies 5-3, with three of the shots being on frame.
The Grizzlies pulled in front in the second half on a set piece. Franklin striker Maddie Fleet later put the ball in the upper corner for her 24th goal on the season to lead the conference.
After an injury to the Mount's Jasmine Cahill delayed play for several minutes, the Grizzlies scored again when a Franklin player got free on a ball through the defense and easily beat the keeper to give Franklin a two-goal lead.
The Lions had just two shots in the second half.
