Lions triumph against Golden Eagles in season opener

Box Score

The Mount St. Joseph University men's soccer team opened the 2015 season with a 3-2 win against the Spalding Golden Eagles on Tuesday.

It was a strong early test for the Lions. Spalding (0-1) finishes last season 12-6-1 and are picked to be near the top of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Lions took an early lead, scoring two goals in the first half. Teddy Kerr (Cleves, OH/St. Xavier) headed in a goal from a throw in by Zach Kuebler (Hilliard, OH/Hilliard Derby) to give the Lions the lead. Spalding rallied back to score two goals late in the first half to tie the game.

The Mount's DeWitt Cook (Forman, CT/Cincinnati, OH) gave the Lions the lead back with a deflected pass that gave him an open shot on goal. He hammered the ball into the back of the net for the game winner.

The Lions take on rival Thomas More College at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Schueler Field.
