Late goal sends Lions to overtime victory at Wilmington

Box Score

The Lions women's soccer team defeated the Wilmington College Quakers 1-0 in a double overtime thriller Tuesday to open the 2015 season, scoring with 73 seconds remaining in the match.

Freshman Jordan Staggs (Cleves, OH) netted the winner.

The Lions (1-0, 0-0) start the season off strong while Wilmington drops to 0-1.

"Tonight we played like a team. We held on through the tough moments and some chaos to get a great result against a team that is always well coached, prepared and plays with passion and aggression," said MSJ head coach Josh Hess. "There was a point in the second half where I thought to myself, 'I really haven't done anything to deserve this effort from this group of,players.' Everyone was together, the players on the bench were there in the moment with the players on the field, it was a great game to watch and be a part of. I am just so proud of those ladies tonight."

MSJ women’s soccer had not defeated Wilmington in more than a decade.

The Lions home opener will take place Saturday at 1 p.m. when they will take on Muskingum University at Scheuler Field.
