Volleyball opens season with win against Cincinnati Christian

Box Score

The Lions women's volleyball team earned a 3-1 win against Cincinnati Christian University on the road Tuesday to open the 2015 season.

Tuesday's match was only the second time the two teams have met with the Lions winning both, sweeping CCU last season.

"This was a good opening match for us. We were able to play 15 players and give the freshman some much needed expereince. It is always nice to start out on a win," said Lions head coach Jon Bennett.

MSJ will be back in action Sept. 4 when they play two matches against Albion and Kalamazoo College during the MIAA/HCAC Challenge at Adrian College in Adrian, Mich.

In set one against CCU, Lions middle hitter Jadah Jackson’s (Indianapolis, Ind.) kill gave MSJ a 19-14 lead and the team went on to win the set 25-16. Jackson ended the night with 3.5 blocks.

The Lions won the second set 25-21 with Hannah Losey (Tipp City) helping the Lions to an early 11-6 lead. Jessica Wilgenbusch (Sunman, Ind.) ended the night with nine kills and 10 digs, and the match-winning kill.

A slow start to the third set helped CCU cruise to a 25-14 win.

In the fourth set, CCU led 17-14, but that didn’t phase the Lions. Jackson came back with a block to tie the game, 18-18. Emily Bostian (Liberty Township) had a block of her own to tie the game 24-24, and the Lions went on to win 26-24.

Lynsee Spatz (Lebanon) opened her freshman career with 14 assists.
