Box Score The Mount St. Â Joseph Lions fell to rival Wittenberg University on Wednesday night by a score of 3-2. The Tigers scored the clincher in the 88th minute.
The Lions started out slow in the first half, only having two shots on goal with Wittenberg having six. The Tigers took the lead, scoring a goal in the 31st minute.
The second half of the game picked up dramatically, with both teams springing to life. Trey Crone (Villa Hills, KY/Dixie Heights) gave the Lions life, scoring a penalty kick early in the half.
In the 60th minute, things got interesting. Wittenberg was awarded a penalty kick for an illegal slide tackle in the box. Before the kick was taken, a scuffle broke out and pushing occurred. The outcome led to three yellow cards given out, two going to Wittenberg players and one to a Mount player. After a long pause in the game, the penalty kick was finally taken. The Wittenberg player fired a shot that rattled off the crossbar.
The Tigers eventually scored a goal to take the lead for the second time in the game. Shortly after, a long cross from the Lions led to the goalie charging and knocking over a Mount player in the box for another penalty kick. Crone stepped up again and once again put it in the back of the net, giving the Lions life once again.
The Tigers scored in the 88th minute from a long cross and header to take the lead and inevitably win the game. Wittenberg outshot the Lions 15-5 in the game.
There were six yellow cards given in the game, with four going to the Lions.
The Lions take on Wabash College on the road Sunday. The next home match for the Mount is at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Cincinnati Christian University at 7 p.m.Â
