Women's soccer ties Spalding in 2OT thriller

Box Score

Women’s soccer tied Spalding University (3-2-1) in a double overtime thriller 2-2 on Friday night. The Lions advance to 5-0-1 and remaining unbeaten on the season.

In the 22nd minute Maggie Tidwell booted the ball down the field, leaving Morgan Knasel (Sidney, OH/Sidney) to jet past a defender to give her a one-on-one chance with the goalie. Knasel fired the ball past the Spalding goalkeeper, giving the Lions the lead. The Spalding Golden Eagles answered right back, scoring the equalizer 10 minutes later.

The Golden Eagles received an opportunity to take the lead in the second half when Michelle Hessling (Hamilton, OH/Hamilton Badin) ran into a Spalding player who had broken loose, resulting in a penalty kick. The Spalding player chose the left side with Hessling guessing correctly and making the save. Unfortunately, the ball went right back to the shooter who finished the goal, giving Spalding a 2-1 lead.

In the 76th minute, Kaylan Gruber (Harrison, OH/Harrison) made a good run down the sideline. When she got down near the corner, she crossed the ball to Taylor Clark (Hamilton, OH/Ross) who stuck out her body and knocked it just past the Spalding goalkeeper.

The Lions dominated possession in both overtimes, coming up with a few shots that nearly gave them the win.

The Lions accumulated 17 shots in the match, with 11 on target. They also held the Golden Eagles to just three shots on goal.

The next home game for the Lions will be against conference rival Franklin College at 6 p.m. on Friday. It will be the first HCAC game of the year for the Mount. Franklin is 5-1 on the year.
