Volleyball splits doubleheader at Hiram

The Mount women’s volleyball team (5-6) fell 3-0 to Fredonia State University (N.Y.) (10-1) before rebounding for a convincing 3-0 sweep against Kalamazoo College (1-8) at the Hiram Invitational on Friday.

The Lions could not get the offense off the ground in the first match, hitting an even .000 with 22 kills and 22 errors. Junior Jessica Wilgenbusch (Sunman, Ind./East Central) led the way with seven kills and just one error in the match for the Lions, also adding a team-high nine digs.

Fredonia hit .171 in the match and had 53 digs.

In the second match the Lions’ defense found its groove, holding Kalamazoo to -.109 attacking in the match. The Lions forced 37 errors while allowing just 25 kills.

The Lions had 12 team blocks, with eight block assists and one solo block coming from senior Emily Bostian (Liberty Township, OH/Lakota East).

The Lions continue the trip with matches at 2 p.m. on Saturday against tournament host Hiram College followed by Marietta College at 4 p.m.
