Box Score The Mount St. Joseph University football team scored 38 unanswered points after trailing by 20 to beat Defiance College on Saturday 38-20 on Schueler Field at the Mount Athletics Complex.
The Lions earned their first win of the season and a crucial conference win. The Mount record is now 1-1 on the year and 1-0 in conference. Defiance drops to 0-3 and 0-1 in the HCAC.
Senior running back Charles McCall (Miami, FL/Norland) recorded 158 yards, including an 81 yard touchdown run in the 4th quarter.
Garrett Weaver (Cincinnati, OH/Amelia) led the team in receiving for the second straight week with 131 yards from five targets and three touchdowns. Quinn Farrell (Ft. Myers, FL/Bishop Verot) finished with 277 yards passing and three touchdowns. Farrell played in only three quarters after suffering an injury midway through the third quarter.Â
The Lions started out slow in the first half, giving up a 29 yard pass touchdown. On the next possession for the Mount, the Yellow Jackets returned an interception 43 yards to take a 14-0 lead. Defiance also made two field goals to finish the first quarter ahead 20-0.
In the second quarter, the game went back and forth until late in the quarter when the Lions showed some life. Farrell connected with Weaver for a 23 yard touchdown to give the Lions their first score with 1:36 left in the half. On the next possession, Defiance quarterback Logan Scott threw a pass over the middle that was intercepted by Tyler White (Cincinnati, OH/Fairfield). With 53 seconds left in the half, Farrell again connected with Weaver for an 18 yard touchdown.Â
Mike Williams (Cincinnati, OH/Taft) rushed for a two yard touchdown on the first drive of the third quarter, capping a 63 yard drive and giving the Lions its first lead. On the next possession, Farrell once again found an open Weaver in the endzone.
The next home game for the Lions is at 6 p.m., Oct. 3 on Schueler Field at the Mount Athletics Complex against Earlham College.
