The offense could not find points in its final possession with under two minutes to play and the Mount St. Joseph University men’s football team fell 42-39 in a wild season opener on the road against Augustana College on Saturday night.
Freshman Mount quarterback Quinn Farrell (Fort Myers, FL/Bishop Verot) completed 21 of 40 attempts for 245 yards, while senior runningback Charles McCall (Miami, FL/Miami Norland) rushed 12 times for 92 yards in the loss. The Mount defense was unable to handle a balanced Augustana offensive attack that totaled 237 yards passing and 285 yards rushing.
The start to the season could not have gone better. Farrell hooked up with freshman wide receiver Garrett Weaver (Cincinnati, OH/Amelia) for a 34 yard strike on the game’s first drive. The Mount defense forced a punt and the Lions countered with a field goal to start the game with a 10-0 lead.
Augustana (1-0) closed the first quarter with a rushing touchdown to cut the lead to three with seven seconds remaining in the first quarter. The momentum carried into the second quarter as Augustana outscored the Lions (0-1) 21-7 in the second quarter.
Weaver led the Lions in receiving with four receptions for a remarkable 152 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Augustana leads the planned four-game series 2-1 with the fourth game to be played in Cincinnati next year.
The Lions have a bye week next week before their home opener at 1:30 p.m., Sept. 19th at the Mount Sports Complex in a conference matchup against Defiance College.
