THE BASICS:
Mount St. Joseph (0-2) fell for the second time in as many weeks, this time on the road against a stout DePauw (1-0) team. DePauw was able to capitalize on 4 Lions turnovers, and defeat the Lions 44-10.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
DePauw took the opening kickoff, and put together a solid drive to open the game. They put together an 11 play drive, but the Lions were able to bow their neck and keep the Tigers out of the end zone. DePauw converted a 47 yard field goal attempt to get the scoring started taking a 3-0 lead.
The Lions took their first possession and were able to get moving, as freshman Chaitin Tomlin got the start and got out of the gates hot. Tomlin completed his first three attempts of the game. On his 4th drop back he took a sack and the Lions could not regain the momentum. Punting the ball away after an 8 play drive.
DePauw was able to continue their scoring ways going on a 9 play, 89 yard touchdown drive. Which was capped off by a 34 yard touchdown strike.
After another Lions 3-and-out, they were able to get their first break on DePauws next possession. The Lions were able to turn DePauw over as Tavon Robertson knifed in force a fumble, just as the Tigers were threatening to score again.
The turnover bug began to plague the Lions again as 2 plays later, Quinn Farrell threw an interception. DePauw turned that into points immediately as their first play was a 20 yard touchdown pass, pushing the score to 17-0.
The Lions finally got on the board on the back of a Mike Williams 1-yard touchdown run, after a failed 2-pt conversion the score stood 20-6 in favor of the Tigers.
DePauw was able to add one more touchdown in the first half pushing the score to 27-6 at the break.
The Lions took the second half's first possession and marched the ball down the field. Marching the ball all the way down to the DePauw 7 yard line. But they were unable to convert a 4th-and-2 from the 7, and came away with nothing.
The following Lions drive also wound up as a turnover on downs inside the 10 yard line. Squandering these opportunities would come back to haunt the Lions.
After another DePauw turnover, the Lions were able to find the end zone, a 13 yard pass from Tomlin to Garret Weaver. The score stood 34-13 after the score.
The Tigers answered on their next possession, scoring a touchdown to cap off an 11 play, 91 yard drive. Pushing the score to 41-13
