The Basics:
Mount St. Joseph controlled the game early with outstanding defensive play. The Lions were able to strike first in the 40th minute to give themselves a 1-0 lead at the end of the first half. The second half continued to be a defensive show for The Mount, doing an amazing job of keeping the ball away from the goal to limit the shots by Hanover. The Lions increased their lead with another goal early in the half to prevail 2-0 over the Panthers.
How It Happened:
The game started as a battle between the two great teams. Both teams were relentless on the defensive end. In the first half, The Mount had nine shots while holding the Panthers to 0. The Lions were able to maintain control of the ball and get it to the net for multiple shots at the goalie. They were finally able to connect with a goal after Lindsey Potzick (Harrison, OH/ Harrison) crossed the ball in front of the net to set up her teammate Jodie Weimer (Cleves, OH Taylor). The goal put the Lions up 1-0 in the 40th minute. In the second half, the Lions kept the same defensive intensity, allowing the Panthers to just three shots. The hustle from The Mount kept the ball on its side of the field for a majority of the half. The Lions were able to increase their lead to 2-0 after Morgan Knasel (Sidney, OH/ Sidney) got a clear shot at the net in the 66th minute. With the win, the Lions have now jumped into second place in the HCAC standings.
Standouts:
Exceptional defensive play has been the story for the Lions all season. The team was able to show up tonight against a fierce conference competitor and absolutely shut them down. The defense continues to play well week after week and is a big reason for the team's success. Jodie Weimer had a great game. She was able to put the Lions ahead with the first goal to set the tone for the rest of the match. She was able to play some amazing defense and move the ball with precise passes to her teammates in the win.

The Lions (15-3, 6-2) will wrap up their regular season with another conference matchup and try to solidify their spot in the HCAC tournament. They will travel to face Defiance (1-12-2, 0-6-2) this Saturday, 10/28 at 1:00 p.m.
