Mount St. Joseph Clinches Postseason Spot with Win over Defiance

Box Score

Location: Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field (Defiance, OH)

The Basics:

Mount St. Joseph was able to get the offense going early in the match against Defiance.  The Lions were aggressive, totaling 22 shots in the first half.  They were able to get the ball into the net multiple times to jump to a comfortable lead of 4-0.  In the second half, the Mount dominated defensively to hold the Yellow Jackets to 5 shots.  Defiance was able to get past the Lion's defense to shorten the gap with a goal in the 69th minute, but Mount St. Joseph would finish the game on top with a final score of 4-1.

How it Happened:

The Lions dominated in the beginning of the match.  They maintained possession for a majority of the first half, which gave them multiple opportunities at the net.  The Lions totaled 22 shots compared to the Yellow Jacket's 2.  The Mount's offense was able to produce 4 goals before halftime.  The Mount scored first with a goal from Kaylan Gruber (Harrison, OH/ Harrison) after an assist from Jodie Weimer (Cleves, OH/ Taylor).  This would put the Lions up 1-0 in the 12th minute.  The next score came after Brenna Lonneman (Windham, NH/ Central Catholic) was able to set up April Zeiger (Harrison, OH/ Harrison) with a shot at the net.  The Lions would score twice more before the end of the half with goals coming from Jasmine Cahill (Independence, KY/ Simon Kenton) and Jodie Weimer.  The Lions would head in for halftime leading with a score of 4-0.  In the second half Mount St. Joseph was able to continue the great defensive play to hold Defiance to 5 shots.  Defiance would put a score up on the board in the 69th minute, but the Lions would ultimately defeat the Yellow Jackets with a final score of 4-1.   The Lions have clinched a spot in the post season with this win, and will be hosting their first game in the tournament.

Standouts:

Jodie Weimer had an incredible performance in the win.  She was able to record an assist to set up her teammate for the first goal of the game.  She also recorded a goal of her own in the final seconds of the first half.  The defensive play for the Lions was outstanding.  They only allowed 7 shots in the entire match to defeat the Yellow Jackets.
