The Basics:
The Lions faced Transylvania University in their second conference game of the season. Transylvania is first if the HCAC at the moment with an undefeated record of 8-0 and conference record of 1-0. The Lions had their hands full, doing a great job at playing defense around the net to stop the Pioneers from scoring. Transylvania was able to sneak past the defense of the Lions twice in the first half to take the 2-0 lead. In the second half the Lions were able to score off of a penalty kick to decrease the lead. The Mount would not be able to score again in the second half which resulted in a win by the Pioneers with a final score of 2-1.
How it Happened:
The match started slow for the Lions as they were only able to get 3 shots at the goal in the first half. The Pioneers were in control of the game, handling the ball very well. Transylvania was able to strike first to take the lead 1-0 in the 24th minute. The Lions continued to struggle to get past the Pioneer defense. Later in the second half Transylvania was able to score again to increase their lead to 2-0. This would be the score at the half as the Lions looked to get back into the match. Coming into the second half the Lions were fouled near the net after trying to score. This gave Seth Freppon (Cold Spring, KY/ Newport Central Catholic) the opportunity at a penalty kick. He was able to connect with the net and decrease the deficit to make the score 2-1. The Mount played amazing defense in the second half to keep the Pioneers scoreless in the second half. Unfortunately the Lions were not able to score another goal of their own to tie the score and the Lions were defeated by the Pioneers with a final score of 2-1.
Standouts:
Seth Freppon was able to lead the team with 3 total shot attempts. He was also able to connect on a penalty kick which gave the Lions their first points of the game. Defensively, Michael Huber (New Richmond, OH/ New Richmond) was able to step up for the Lions. He played the entire game and was able to make some amazing defensive stops to keep the Pioneers from scoring.
