Box Score Richmond, Ind. – The Mount St. Joseph women's soccer team competed in their first HCAC conference match of the season against the Quakers of Earlham College on Saturday. The Lions entered the match with a 4-4-1 record while the Quakers entered the match-up with a 7-1 record, both in non-conference play. The Lions hoped to continue their 3-game winning streak as they begin HCAC play, looking at key players to make their impact.
During the first half of play, the Lions overpowered the Quakers, but were unable to find the back of the net. The first 45 minutes consisted of a powerful Lions offensive and defensive showcase as the Mount outshot the Quakers 14-0 in the first half while also recording seven corner kicks to zero. While there were multiple attempts by multiple Lions to find the back of the net, no one was able to secure the first goal as the teams would enter the half at a 0-0 draw.
The Lions hoped to continue with their momentum in the second half as the second 45 minutes got underway. Madeline Rechel (Harrison, Ohio/Harrison) was able to get the Lions on the board at the start of the 2ndhalf with a goal in the 47thminute. Rechel was able to pick up the reflection off the Quakers goalkeeper diving save and send it into the goal to give the Lions a 1-0 lead to start the half.
The second goal of the game would come from Brooke Chaille (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) in the 76thminute from a shot in-between the 18-yard box and the sideline that sailed over both teams and into the far left side netting of the goal. Chaille recorded her first goal of the season in the match-up against the Quakers, giving the Lions the 2-0 lead, which was ultimately the final score. Goalkeeper Megan Gilpin (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Luers) was able to record her first shutout of the year, making just one save for the day.
By the end of the game, the Mount outshot the Quakers of Earlham College 22-4, with 10 shots on-goal for the day. With HCAC play underway the Lions look to continue putting up shots and recording goals as they look to chase first place and the hope to repeat their reign as HCAC tournament champions.
