Box Score

LOCATION: Harrington Center (Cincinnati, Ohio)

THE BASICS:

Mount St. Joseph 0-4 hosted 1-6 Transylvania to kick of 2021 HCAC league play. Juniors Tanner Clos (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell Co.) and David Luers (Lebanon, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) lead the way for the Lions with 23 and 17 points respectively. The Lions trailed by just four points at the half and with 1:19 remaining in regulation the Lions secured their biggest lead of the night with 9 points. With a 75-foot inbound pass Transylvania Senior Lucas Gentry was able to secure the ball and put up a shot from the free throw line with 0.9 seconds remaining to give the Pioneers the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Play started with the Pioneers getting out to an early 4-point lead but the Lions never went away keeping the lead within 3. With four minutes remaining in the first half a pair of 3-point buckets from Junior David Luers (Lebanon, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) gave the Lions a 4-point lead. But the Lions would fail to score again in the half, with the score showing 34-30 at the break. To start the second half The Mount quickly tied the game at 34 with a bucket from Junior Tanner Clos (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell Co.). For most of the second half Transylvania would gain the lead and quickly have it negated by the Lions offense tying the game. With 4 minutes remaining the Lions would go on an 8-0 run with 2 key 3-pointers from Sophomore Avery Paddock (Alexandria, Ky./Alexandria). With 1:19 remaining in regulation the Lions lead by 9. After a made three pointer and three buckets from the Pioneers they took a 1-point lead with only 4.2s remaining. Coach Carrigan would then call a timeout near the Pioneers basket to draw up one final play, and it was perfect. Freshman Willard Cluxton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) inbounds the ball to the left to Avery Paddock who then gives the ball back to Cluxton for a quick layup giving the Lions a 1-point lead with only 0.9 seconds remaining. After a Pioneer timeout, Transylvania Senior Will Sivills was ready to inbound the ball. After running the baseline he launched the ball 75 feet to Pioneer senior Lucas Gentry who was able to get a shot off from the free throw line to secure the win.
