RICHMOND, Ind. - On Saturday, October 23rd your Mount St. Joseph University Lions traveled to Earlham College to take on the Quakers in a HCAC matchup. The Lions scored a pair of goals early and another in the second half carrying the Lions to a 3-1 victory.
The Lions got off to a hot start in the first half. After a trio of shots, the Lions were able to find the net in just the 16th minute.
Tyler Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) netted his first goal of the season off a feed from
Luis Martinez Velez (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Cupeyville) to give the Lions an early 1-0 lead.
The Lions wasted no time on the kickoff following the goal, scoring immediately again in the 16th minute. This time it was the freshman
Taidan Fox (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) scoring his 7th goal of the season to give the Lions a 2-0 advantage early in the first half. Following, the goal the Lions were able to hold off the Earlham attack heading into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.
To begin the second half of play the Lions flooded the net with shots. In the first 6 minutes of the half the Lions tallied 5 shots but could not find the net. But, in the 65th minute of play the Lions would finally strike again. This time it was
Luis Martinez Velez with the goal, his second of the year extending the Lions lead to 3-0. Following the goal the Lions held a more defensive approach. But, in the 85th minute Earlham was able to trim the deficit to 3-1 but it was a little too late. After 90 minutes of play the Lions were victorious by a score of 3-1.
The Lions tallied 14 shots, 9 on target, in the victory. Goalkeeper Matthew HIbbard (Cleves, Ohio/Taylor) had a solid game in the goal saving 4 shots in the victory, getting his 2nd victory of the season.
Michael Abel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) and
Taidan Fox led the Lions in shots with 3 each.
