CINCINNATI, Ohio - On Wednesday, October 6th your Mount St. Joseph University Lions welcomed the Beavers of Bluffton University to Schueler Field for a HCAC matchup. The Lions came into the match undefeated in HCAC play and did not disappoint against the Beavers. The Lions had complete control of the game from the kickoff scoring 7 goals in a 7-0 shutout victory. Four different Lions scored on the night including McKenzie Schneeman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Deer Park) who scored 4 goals including an impressive bicycle kick to earn herself some style points.
To begin the first half of play the Lions were eager to find the net. The Lions registered 6 shots in just the first 10 minutes of play as they were controlling the script of the match. Following a pair of shots from the Lions
Catherine Hatfield (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia) would get the scoring started for the Lions. Off a corner kick from
Poetrie Bedgood (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mercy McAuley) Hatfield would use her head to knock the ball into the top left corner of the net giving the Lions a 1-0 advantage in the 21st minute of play.
It didn't take long for the Lions to strike again scoring just 2 minutes later in the 23rd minute. After a cross from
Emily Reichling (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) the Bluffton goalkeeper mishandled the ball and caused a frenzy right in front of the net.
Haley Trittschuh (Dayton, Ohio/Butler) was able to get her foot on the ball and knock it into the net extending the Lions lead to 2-0. But, the Lions weren't done in the first half.
Mckenzie Schneeman would score her 1st of 4 goals on the night off a throw-in from
Holly Knippenberg (Lawrenceburg, Ind./Lawrenceburg). Schneeman would receive the pass and turn firing the ball over the keeper's outstretched arms and into the top left corner of the net giving the Lions a 3-0 lead.
The Lions wouldn't score again until after halftime. Schneeman would score her most impressive goal of the night off a pass from
Poetrie Bedgood in the 47th minute of play. Schneeman found herself in perfect position in the box slamming a bicycle kick into the bottom right hand corner of the net giving the Lions a 4-0 lead while also earning some style points on the score. The Lions continued to score in bunches extending the lead again in the 51st minute. Schneeman would find the net for the 3rd time off a mishandled goal kick by the Beavers.
Ella Pittman (Harrison, Ohio/Harrison) would steal the ball and cross it over to Schneeman who hammered the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the net lifting the Lions lead to 5-0.
Schneeman was not satisfied with just 3 goals however, scoring again in the 57th minute. Off a ricocheted corner kick Schneeman would find herself alone at the top of the box shooting and scoring once again to give the Lions a 6-0 lead. The Lions offense would slow down from this point but added another late goal in the 81st minute. Off another corner kick, this time it was
Hannah Keith (CIncinnati, Ohio/Anderson) crossing the ball into the box. A second frenzy in the box occurred and this time it was
Mariah Briggs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mercy McAuley) who poked the ball past the keeper and into the net giving the Lions a 7-0 lead. That would be all the scoring after 90 minutes of play as the Lions move to 3-0 in HCAC play.
The offense was tremendous on the night for the Lions but the defense was as well. The Lions back line only allowed 4 shots in the contest while
Megan Gilpin (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Luers) was only asked to make 1 save. Gilpin finished with her 2nd shutout victory on the year. Schneeman led the Lions with 4 goals on 5 shots.
Poetrie Bedgood led the pack with 2 assists in the contest.
