Freshman Evan Wiehe leads The Mount past Wilmington 65-60

WILMINGTON, Ohio - Your Mount St. Joseph University Lions men's basketball squad traveled to Wilmington College Wednesday night to take on the Quakers. The Lions started off hot going on a 15-2 run to start the game and finished the half leading 31-23. Roughly halfway through the second half the Quakers were able to climb back tying the game at 45 with 8 minutes remaining. But after 6 straight points from Freshman Evan Wiehe (Northfield, Ohio/Nordonia) the Lions held a 3 point lead. The Lions would hold onto the lead and finish the game ahead 65-60 notching the Lions first win of the season.

To start the first half the Lions were on fire from deep hitting 5 straight three-point baskets. Senior Devin Young (Crestwood, Ky./South Oldham) got it going for the Lions hitting the first two. Next it was David Luers (Lebanon, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick), Evan Wiehe, and Josh Batte (Cincinnati, Ohio/Taylor) all hitting consecutive three-point buckets lifting the Lions on a 15-2 run to start the game. The Lions rode that momentum into halftime, leading by 8 at the break. In the first half the Lions were phenomenal from beyond the arc shooting 47%. 

To begin the second half the Lions picked up where they left off with a bucket from Willard Cluxton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) and a three-point bucket from David Luers. But, the Quakers would go on a run of their own taking a 1-point lead with 7:18 remaining. But, Evan Wiehe would score the next 6 points and after a layup from Dayne Gardner (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) the Lions held a 5 point lead. The Lions would hold onto this lead all the way to the finish. At the end of regulation The Mount was victorious by a score of 65-60. 

Freshman Evan Wiehe led the way in scoring with 17 points while adding a rebound and an assist. Devin Young followed with an impressive 14 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Along side Young was David Luers who scored 14 points, a team-high 4 3-pointers, 8 rebounds and 3 assists. The team shot 44% from the floor and 43.5% from beyond the arc in the victory. 

UP NEXT: Your Mount St. Joseph Lions return to Cincinnati for their home opener this weekend apart of the 2021 Lauren Hill Tip-Off Classic. The Lions will host Bethany College on Saturday, November 13th with tip-off beginning at 8PM.
