Men's Basketball Falls in Heartbreaking Fashion to Wabash

Cincinnati, Ohio--In their second contest in as many days, the Mount St. Joseph University Lions hosted Wabash.  The Lions entered this game an even (4-4) on the season coming off of last nights win over Bluffton.  This game was a true battle of high powered offenses, as Wabash was able to outpace the Lions 96-88.

Wabash earned the first score of the game, after forcing a Lions miss on the opening touch of the afternoon, however Devin Young was able to quickly respond with a layup of his own.  This trend of trading scores continued for both teams, until the Mount was able to build a 5-0 run to volt them to a 19-14.  This run saw Dayne Gardner back a defender down deep into the post before getting an easy layup and David Lures locating Brady Thomas on the fast break for an easy three.  The staggering scoring of both clubs did not stop the entirety of the first half, seeing the Lions enter the break leading 41-39.

In the first half of action the Lions were able to carry over their impressive shooting performance from the night before, knocking down 51% of their attempts from the field.  Wabash was also impressive in their shooting, registering 50% from the field.  This evenly fought first half of action saw Thomas record 12 points, beating the buzzer with a clean jump shot from the paint right before the break.

Coming out of the break Wabash was able to knot the score up, with a layup coming just eight seconds after play resumed.  They followed this with a deep-ball of their own that pushed them ahead 44-41.  However that put an end to the Lions short lul in scoring as Evan Wiehe was able to kick the ball across the court to Willard Cluxton, who found the bottom of the net from behind the arc.  With the game tied, Wabash was able to catch fire going on a 9-2 run to earn a 60-53 lead.

Still trailing, by six, with 10 miutes of action remaining the Lions began to crawl their way back into the game, seeing Lures knock down the deep ball to narrow the Wabash lead to 66-63.  Following a defensive stop for the Lions, Lures added two more to the Lions cause, hitting a tightly contested jumper, near the elbow.  After both teams exchanged buckets, Cluxton came up with a huge score, draining the three-pointer to knot the game back up at 70-70.

With 7:47 left on the clock the Lions were able to gain the lead on the score board as Lures once again nailed a shot from behind the arc, seeing the Lions pull past Wabash 73-72.  Both teams were neck and neck for almost five minutes of action.  With 2:40 remaining the Lions were able to race ahead to a 86-83 lead, after Alex Totten found Thomas cutting to the basket for an easy score.  However Wabash reclaimed the lead, after All-American Jack Davidson knocked down a three-pointer to pull them ahead 88-86.  With the game being close the Lions attempted to preserve time, sending Wabash to the Charity stripe several times, allowing them to leave the Harrington Center with a 96-88 win.

Despite the hard fought loss the Lions displayed one of their best performances of the season.  Thomas came off of the bench and led the Lions in scoring with 27 points and grabbing 7 rebounds.  Gardner had a huge game, pouring on 20 points on a perfect 7-7 shooting from the field and 6-7 from the free-throw line, while grabbing 5 boards and dishing out 3 assists.  Lures entered the contest from the bench and gave the Lions 15 points on 3-5 shooting from behind the arc.  Wiehe also rounded out the double digit scores for the Lions, scoring 11 points.

Along with the four double-digit performances for the Lions, the pair of Cluxton and Young played important roles in this game.  Cluxton finished the game with eight, timely, points going 2-3 behind the arc.  Young score five points, while adding six assists, four rebounds and a steal.

The Lions will now begin preparing for their next opponent, the Wittenberg Tigers.  The Lions will host the Wittenberg on Thursday, December 30.  This game is set to tip-off at 3 PM.  For continued coverage of this upcoming game and all other MSJ Athletics continue to follow msjlions.com
