No. 13 MSJ Women's Volleyball Team Beats #17 Franklin in Straight Sets to Advance to HCAC Championship

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph University women's volleyball team played host to Franklin College on Friday night in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference semi-final match. The Lions, the newly minted No. 13 team in the nation dispatched of Franklin in straight sets to secure a spot on the HCAC Championship match on Sunday at Transylvania.

The Mount like in the early season's contests with Franklin, took the match in straight sets (25-17,25-22,25-23). Despite the straight sets win this match was much closer than the final 3-0 scoreline.

"We came out firing" said coach Spinney. "Franklin got off a bus ride, and I think they came out a little bit flat. And we absolutely took advantage of that in the first set. After that first set it was an extremely competitive match."

After jumping out to a quick lead the Lions were able to hold on down the stretch of the second and third sets in order to secure the win.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Offensively it was the three-headed monster of Brooke Aselage, Emily Abshire and Grace Young who led the way for the Mount, as they have done for the entire season.
  • Aselage continued to stuff the stat sheet in this one as she had a match-high with 14 kills and a match-high 19 digs
  • Abshire also joined her in double figures in kill with 12, while Young was able to pitch in 10
  • The middles in the match Kyla Henderson and Addie Conley combined for 11 kills and each hit an outstanding .333 for the match
  • Setter Sam Buschur was again solid dishing out 36 assists.
  • Coach Spinney was extremely pleased with his defense and most of that credit goes to Libero Erin Androne, and defensive specialists Brooklyn Brunner and Kirsten Jeffries.
