GREENCASTLE, Ind. - On Tuesday, March 30th your Mount St. Joseph Lions traveled to Greencastle, Ind. to take on the #7 team in the country, the DePauw Tigers. The Lions didn't waste any time scoring 6 runs on 5 hits in the first inning.
Senior
Alehia Tucker (Covington, Ky./Holy Cross) started the inning off for the Lions with a single to center field. After stealing second base
Elizabeth Ivers (Shelbyville, Ky./Shelby Co.) singled down the left field line.
Sara Kardos (Lexington, Ky./Tates Creek) was up next and was hit by a base which loaded the bases for
Sarah Miller (Fishers, Ind./St. Theodore Guerin). Miller would then draw a walk, scoring Tucker to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. Following the walk
Casey Bramble (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) was at the plate and singled scoring Ivers for the second run of the inning making the score 2-0. Next,
Ali Lang (Eminence, Ind./Martinsville) stepped into the box and slapped a ball to left field scoring two runs to open up the game to 4-0. Following the two RBI single from Lang the Lions scored another run on a fielder's choice making the score 5-0. Now heading back to the top of the lineup, Tucker was at the plate for the second time in the inning and didn't disappoint. Tucker doubled down the left field line scoring another run for the Lions making it a 6-0 ballgame before the Tigers could even step up to the plate.
In the bottom half of the first inning the Tigers got two of their runs back off a 2-run homerun to make the score 6-2. After the first inning, the ballgame turned into a pitching duel between The Mount's
Sarah Miller and DePauw's Riley Magoon. After 4 scoreless innings for both pitchers the Lions were able to break through in the top of the 6th.
The 6th started off with a familiar play, a double from
Alehia Tucker. Following the first out of the inning
Elizabeth Ivers stepped up to the plate and drove a ball down the right field line for a double of her own. Tucker scored on the play making this a 7-2 ballgame. After a quiet inning from the Tigers the Lions were able to strike again in the top of the 7th. First,
Rachel Gabbard (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) started the innings with a 1-out single to left field. After reaching second on a ground ball
Alehia Tucker added to her stat line again with another double down the left field line, scoring Gabbard. At the end of the 7th the Lions held an 8-2 lead which would then be the final score. The Lions flew by the #7 ranked DePauw 8-2.
Alehia Tucker had a massive day for the Lions going 4-5 with 3 doubles, driving in 2 runs and stealing a base.
Elizabeth Ivers also had a good day for the Lions going 2-4 with a double, driving in 1 run, and walking once.
Casey Bramble also went 2-4 on the day driving in a run of her own. Finally,
Rachel Gabbard went 2-4 while driving in a run.
Sarah Miller had an impressive day on the mound allowing only 2 runs to the nationally ranked Tigers. In 7 innings pitched Miller gave up 7 hits on 2 runs while only walking 1 batter. The Lions showed impressive defense on the day as well by not recording an error as Miller faced 29 batters. The Lions move to 11-6 on the year with impressive wins over both #7 DePauw and #19 Wartburg.
Game 2 of the series was postponed in the top of the 4th due to inclement weather. The Mount was leading that game 1-0 with runners on the corners and 1 out.
