CINCINNATI, Ohio - Your Mount St. Joseph Lions hosted the Alma Scots this Sunday in a double-header matchup. The Lions dropped the first game but bounced back with a win in the second game.
The Lions kicked off the double-header Sunday with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting and first pitches from Mount St. Joseph President H. James Williams and Mount St. Joseph CFO Jeff Briggs. The festivities celebrated the Lions new turf outfield at Kinder Morgan Softball Complex. We would like to thank President H. James Williams and CFO Jeff Briggs for their time and commitment to this project and making it come to life.
GAME 1 | MSJ 1 - Alma 5
In the first game on Sunday the Lions struggled to wake up the bats. In the third inning the Scots jumped out to a 1-0 lead after a 2-out double. They then extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the 6th and again to 5-0 in the top of the 7th. The Lions attempted to cut into the Scots lead in the bottom of the 7th with a 2-out single from
Rachel Gabbard knocking in one run. But the Lions couldn't get much more going as the game ended with Alma ahead 5-1.
GAME 2 | MSJ 6 - ALMA 2
Unlike the first game the Lions woke up the bats to start this contest with a lead-off double from Senior
Alehia Tucker who had four hits in the game. After stealing 3rd base Tucker reached home on an error giving the Lions an early 1-0 lead. In the top of the third the Scots were able to neutralize the game with a double to left center bringing in 1 run. But not for long as the Lions got that run right back. In the bottom half of the third Tucker hit her second double of the game and then advanced to third on an error. After
Elizabeth Ivers reached first on another error, Tucker scored giving the Lions a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom half of the 4th
Alehia Tucker came to the plate again. Tucker with her third hit of the game tripled to right field driving in two runs giving the Lions a 4-1 lead. Alma cut into the Lions lead the next inning in the top of the 5th with a RBI single. The Lions lead now sits at 4-2.
In the bottom half of the 5th the Lions got the bats going again. To lead-off the inning catcher
Elizabeth Ivers doubled to right field. After
Sarah Miller reached first on an error and advanced to second the Lions scored moving their lead to 5-2. Miller then advanced the third on a passed ball and then scored on a
Kaci Finchum single. After the 5th inning the Lions lead 6-2. After 7 innings that was the final score with the Lions totaling 6 runs on 6 hits. Senior
Alehia Tucker finished the game perfect going 4-4 with 2 doubles a triple and a single while driving in 2 runs.
On the mound was Junior
Kamryn McCool who pitched 7 innings and gave up 2 runs on 5 hits while striking out 9 batters in a dominant performance.
