Lions fall to Defiance in Penalty Kicks to End Shortened Season

DEFIANCE, Ohio - On Thursday your Mount St. Joseph Lions traveled to Defiance College to take on the Yellow Jackets to close out play for this year's shortened season. It was a quiet game for both squads as no goals were scored until the penalty shootout.

The Lions began play with stellar defense. To start the Yellow Jackets flooded the net with shots but goalkeeper Gustavo Gutierrez (Montclair, Cali./Boone Co.) continued to make stops. To end the first half the Lions made a push with 4 unanswered shots but nothing to show for it.

To start the second half Gutierrez continued to have his way in the net making 3 straight saves. Following a shot from Daniel Good (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) Defiance's Alex Moore was shown a yellow card. This didn't slow down the Yellow Jackets offense thought as they continued to flood the net with shots, but still nothing to show for it after 90 minutes of play.

The first overtime period was much like the first 90 minutes, both teams showing strong defensive stands. The Lions were able to get 2 shots off but none on target moving this game to the second overtime period.

In the second period of overtime the Lions again managed to get 2 shots, 1 on target, but no goals for either team. After 110 minutes of play, no goals were scored pushing the game to penalty shots.

The Lions missed their first shot while Defiance was able to knock their's through giving them a 1-0 advantage. Then, the Lions would miss again but Gutierrez would bail them out with a miss from Defiance. Following the miss, Nicholas Phelps (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell Co.) was finally able to find the net for the Lions tying the score up at 1-1. The Yellow Jackets would respond with a goal for themselves giving them a 2-1 lead. After a Lions miss and another Defiance made penalty kick the game would come to a close with Defiance coming out on top 3-1 in a penalty shootout.

Michael Abel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) led the Lions with 3 shots in the contest, 2 on target. Gustavo Gutierrez had a fantastic night in the net to close out the season making 10 saves and not allowing a goal until the penalty shootout.

The Lions finished the season with a 2-7-1 record, playing all conference matchups. Check in next season as the Lions hope to resume to a normal schedule, Thank you for following along!
