RICHMOND, Ind. - On Saturday, April 10th your Mount St. Joseph Lions squared off against the Earlham College Quakers. The Lions looked to end their 2-game skid with a win in this matchup. Behind a dominant performance from
Bryce Smith (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) the Lions did just that.
To begin the game each team showed stellar defense, causing turnovers left and right. It wasn't until 6:04 remained in the first quarter that we would see a goal.
Jesse Robinson (Lexington, Ky./Frederick Douglas) put the Lions ahead with an unassisted goal. Earlham would respond quickly with a goal of their own to even the game at 1. But again, the Lions responded back with a goal with 5:12 remaining in the first quarter, this time it was 1 of
Bryce Smith's 4 goals in the contest. After some back and forth play from each team the Quakers evened the game back up with 1:12 left in the quarter to make the score 2-2, which is how the quarter finished.
To begin the second quarter both squads came out firing scoring a combined 6 goals in roughly 6 minutes. The Mount's
Bryce Smith scored his second goal of the contest, assisted by sophomore
Nathaniel Bird (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East). Bird also got a pair of goals for himself and with 9:06 remaining the score was knotted up at 5. Earlham would take the lead with 7:48 remaining but the Lions would answer right back. With 3:11 remaining
Solomon Richards (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) would score his 5th goal of the year to tie the game at 6. Roughly 2 minutes later
Michael Addai (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) would score his 3rd of the year off a pass from
Jesse Robinson to give the Lions a 7-6 lead going into halftime.
To begin the 2nd half the Lions would storm out of the gate with a goal from Antione Jackson (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay), his first of the season to boost the Lions lead to 8-6. The Quakers would get one back with 7:48 remaining but in the final 2 minutes,
Bryce Smith would strike again. With 1:47 remaining Smith scored his 3rd goal of the day off a pass from
Jesse Robinson giving the Lions a 9-7 lead. And again with only 10 seconds remaining Smith would score his 4th and final goal of the contest off a pass from
Antoine Jackson stretching the Lions lead to 10-7 going into the final quarter of play.
The 4th quarter was filled with defense as only 1 goal was scored in the quarter. The Lions conceded a goal with 6:50 remaining but that was all for both teams offensively. After a tough battle with the Quakers the Lions were victorious ending their 2-game skid and moving the Lions record to 3-4 on the year.
Bryce Smith was the star today for the Lions scoring 4 goals, giving him 16 on the year, and an assist.
Nathaniel Bird scored 2 goals for the Lions while also recording an assist.
Jesse Robinson was also a key piece of the Lions offense Saturday as he scored 1 goal and assisted 2 others.
Alexander Dudash (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) had a stellar performance between the pipes allowing 8 goals but making 10 saves on the day while being awarded the win.
