Cincinnati, Ohio—The Mount St. Joseph University Football program is looking to improve off of their first win of the 2021 season against Alfred University. In their week three match up, the Lions will take to the road for the first time this season, visiting the Thunder of Trine University as part of the HCAC vs. MIAA crossover.
Trine enters this matchup (1-1) overall against very familiar opponents. The Thunder have played two HCAC opponents to open their season. Week one Trine defeated Manchester University in blow-out fashion 52-14, then falling week two in a tightly contested match-up to Rose-Hulman 31-30. Despite their recent loss, Trine is a very well rounded football team presenting another though out of conference challenge for the Lions.
The offense for the Thunder is very impressive, averaging 421 yards of total offense, while boasting 41 points scored per game. This comes from a well balanced offensive attack that averages 294 passing yards and rushing for 126 yards per game.
Trine's defense has been solid thus far this season. In just two games the Trine defense has forced six turnovers, including four interceptions along with recovering two fumbles. Another aspect of the Thunder defense that is a strong suit, is their pass-rush, having already registered four sacks on the season.
Despite Trines impressive success early this season, the Lions have also had several impressive performances. On the offensive side of the ball the Lions are averaging 165 yards per game on the ground, while passing for 211 yards per game. This can be attributed to Quarterback Josh Taylor who has already registered 210 yards rushing this season, a mark that is good for second in the conference in rushing, while passing for 387 yards.
The Lions defense has been impressive to say the least this season, statistically looking very similar to the defense of Trine. In the first two weeks of play the Mount's defense has forced six turnovers, including four interceptions, two of which are thanks to Junior Corner DeShawn Starks and recovering two fumbles. Additionally the defense has totaled four sacks.
This game is scheduled for Saturday, September 18, with kickoff at 1PM at the campus of Trine University. For additional coverage of this game and all other Lions athletics, continue to follow msjlions.com
