CINCINNATI, Ohio - This Saturday your Mount St. Joseph Lions Women's Soccer team welcomed the Pioneers of Marietta to Schueler Field. The Lions wasted no time getting on the board, scoring twice early and following with stout defense.
It did not take the Lions long to find the back of the net, scoring in just the 12th minute of play. At the 11 minute mark the Lions would receive a corner kick. The Pioneers would attempt to clear the ball but the ball ended up with Senior
Catherine Hatfield (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia) who was roughly 45 yards away from the net. Hatfield would send a ball clear over the Pioneers defense right to Junior
Julia Herzog (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mercy McAuley). Herzog then pressured the left side of the net and tucked the ball into the bottom left corner for a Lions goal.
After a Marietta kickoff the Lions would strike again. This time it was Hatfield doing the scoring. After stealing the ball from the Pioneer defense from about 5 yards out, Hatfield finessed the ball into the top right corner giving the Lions a 2-0 advantage in just the 13th minute.
Marietta did not back down, reducing the Lions lead in the 21st minute with a long 30+ yard goal from Kaylie Ward. After 45 minutes of play the score read 2-1 in the Lions favor.
In the 2nd half of play the Lions defense was spectacular. The Lions held the Pioneers to just 1 shot for the entire second half. After 90 minutes of play the Lions came out victorious by a score of 2-1. The Lions tallied 5 shots, 4 on target, including 2 goals. Lions goalkeeper
Madison Hart (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) finished with 2 saves and 1 goal allowed earning her first win of the season.
After the win Head Coach
Darren Gallagher had this to say about his team, "I'm so proud of our team! Today marks one month since I met the girls for our team meeting and really met them as their coach since being hired. We have grown a lot and we continue to fight for results against every opponent!" With this win the Lions moved to 3-4 on the year nearing the end of non-conference play.
