Springfield, Ohio-- After a dominant performance in the Charlie Wrublewski Invitational, the Mount St. Joseph University Volleyball program looked to continue their success. This weekend the Lions traveled to the campus of Wittenberg for the 2021 Wittenberg Tournament.
Day One:
MSJ @ Wittenberg
The first game of the tournament saw the Lions take on host Wittenberg, in a rematch. In the first meeting between these two teams the Lions came away victorious, winning in five. Despite the early season success against Wittenberg, the Lions dropped this game in straight sets. The duo of Morgan Whitaker and Emily Abshire played well. Whitaker led the team in kills, totaling 13, while Abshire added 10 of her own. Erin Androne was able to total 19 digs through the three sets.
Day Two:
Marietta vs. MSJ
Day two of the tournament saw the Lions take both of their games. The first game of the day the Lions defeated Marietta college in four sets (3-1). Abshire led the team in kills in this game, with 15. Brooke Aselage had a great all around game, registering 11 kills and 12 digs.
Alma vs. MSJ
The final game of the tournament for the Lions saw them defeat Alma in straight sets. Androne continued her dominance in game three, totaling 16 digs in this match. With the defeat of Alma the Lions finished the tournament with a record of 2-1.
There were several standouts for the Lions throughout this tournament. The player that stood out was Androne, who was named to the all-tournament team for the Lions. She achieved this mark by totaling 52 digs throughout the tournament, coming out to an astonishing 5.2 digs per set. Aselage finished the tournament with 30 total kills and 30 digs. Abshire also added 30 kills throughout the tournament. Whitaker played very well throughout the tournament, with 28 kills. Additionally Sam Buschur registered 98 total assists for an average of 9.1 assists per set.
With the completion of this tournament the Lions look forward to traveling to Bloomington Illinois for the Illinois Wesleyan tournament. This will be a two day tournament, starting on Friday 24 against Illinois Wesleyan with this game scheduled for 4:30. Day two will see the Lions play both Calvin College and Aurora University.
