Franklin, Indiana – On Wednesday January 19
th your Mount St. Joseph Women's Basketball team traveled to Franklin, Indiana to take on the Grizzles of Franklin College. This was The Mount's first game since January 5
th due to COVID-19 Issues. The Lions shot a very solid 44% from the field and 42% from the three-point line. The Lions would pull off the tight victory late with a game winning layup with 7 seconds remaining by the final score of 70-69.
The Lions would come out of the gates fast as Guard
Shelby Turner (Pendleton, Ky./Pendleton) would hit a three-point jumper on the first possession followed by a layup to put the lions ahead by two scores early. The Mount would knock down two more three point shots as they grew their lead to 7 with five minutes to play in the first period. For the remainder of the period, the score would continue to go back and forth before
Anyiah Murphy (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Africentric Secondary) would hit back-to-back jumpers to end the period as The Lions would lead 21-14.
To begin the second quarter, The Lions offense would stay hot.
Chloe Jansen (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) would score 6 of the lions first 9 points followed by a pair of threes by
Ellie Oldendick (Gallatin, Ky. Gallatin) and
Haley Scott (Cincinnati, Ohio. Oak Hills) would grow the lead to 13 by the media timeout. The offense would then cool as the lions would finish the half with no more points as the Grizzles would cut the lead to 3 by the half.
In the third quarter of play, the game would go back and forth as the Lions found themselves trailing for the first time in the game. With 1:32 left to play
Haley Scott would knock down her 4
th three pointer of the game to spark a run for the lions. The quarter would end with a bang as
Anyiah Murphy would hit a buzzer beating shot to give the lions a 51-47 lead heading to the fourth.
In the fourth and final period of play, the lead would not be any larger than 4 points for either team. With 2:39 left to play, Chole Jansen would hit a three-point jump shot to pull the lions to within one point. After a Grizzles free throw, Chole Jansen would come up with the steal before finding
Anyiah Murphy for the three as The Lions pulled in front by one point. The Grizzles would hit a basket with 15 seconds remaining and The Mount would have one last chance to win the game.
Anyiah Murphy would bring the ball down the floor and hit the game winning basket with 7 seconds remaining as the Mount would win 70-69.
Anyiah Murphy led the Lions with 20 points and would add along 3 rebounds and 2 steals.
Haley Scott would also add 14 points shooting a team high 4-6 from the three-point line. She would add a team high 7 rebounds in the game.
